Amid rapid growth, Hanoi’s lakes preserve a quieter side of the capital.
Seen across the city’s green lakes, Hanoi reveals not only the face of a rapidly developing capital, but also precious open spaces where the city can pause and reflect. By the water, rows of trees, rooftops, bridges, streets, and new buildings come together in scenes that are both familiar and constantly changing.
Simply stepping away from the heavy traffic and pausing near the water reveals a different side of the city. The view opens up, the light mellows, and breezes moving across the lake seem to soften the hard lines of concrete, the noise of the streets, and the rush of everyday life.
For photographer Vinh Dav, Hanoi’s lakes are more than subjects to capture through the lens. They form part of the city’s visual memory. He often returns at different times of day: when morning mist lingers over the water, when sunlight filters through the trees, when evening settles over gentle ripples, or when the city lights begin to glow.
Careful observation has allowed this photographer to capture the lakes’ distinctive beauty. These green jewels reflect Hanoi’s urban transformation while preserving the softness of everyday life. They add to the capital’s unique appeal: however much Hanoi changes, it retains quiet spaces that linger in one’s memory.
