More than just a tourist haven, Lam Dong is one of Vietnam’s agricultural powerhouses—its success rooted in a harmonious blend of geography, climate, human ingenuity, and technological innovation.

Situated on the Lam Vien Plateau at an average elevation of 1,500 meters and encircled by 1,700-meter mountains, areas such as Cam Ly, Lam Vien, Xuan Truong, Lang Biang, and Xuan Huong form a vast valley rich in streams, waterfalls, and lakes. The region enjoys year-round sunshine and a temperate mountain climate—ideal for tourism and high-tech agriculture alike.

Although the climate is favorable, the soil is less than perfect. The two dominant soil types—red-yellow feralit and mountain humus—often lack essential trace elements like zinc, manganese, and copper, as noted by the Da Lat Nuclear Research Institute. To counter this, local farmers have embraced organic enrichment and smart farming techniques to improve soil fertility.

As tourism grew, so did the demand for fresh produce. Lam Dong’s hardworking and inventive people adapted quickly—introducing greenhouses, protective mulching, and specialized growing zones for vegetables and flowers.

Thanks to its cool climate and sustainable farming practices, Lam Dong’s vegetables are celebrated for their freshness and rich flavor. Found in rustic village markets, nationwide supermarkets, and even in overseas markets, these vegetables are prized for both taste and nutrition.

Artichokes—an iconic crop introduced from Europe in the early 20th century—are a Lam Dong specialty. Though cultivated in other provinces, Lam Dong remains the country’s largest and most reputable producer. Rich in cynarin and silymarin, artichokes are valued for their liver-cleansing, antioxidant, and heart-protective benefits.

Other popular crops include cherry tomatoes—bite-sized, sweet, and packed with antioxidants; spinach—renowned for its dense nutrients and fiber; and crisp, colorful lettuces such as Carol, Romaine, Frisée, and Lolo. All flourish in this temperate highland region.

According to 2024 statistics, Lam Dong cultivated 10,880 hectares of flowers, producing 4.4 billion stems. Of this, 62% came from the northeastern highlands, especially the Lâm Viên Plateau. With abundant natural advantages and advanced farming techniques, the province offers distinctive blooms every season.

Spring is heralded by the blush-pink cherry blossoms blooming around Tran Hung Dao Street, Xuan Huong Lake, and the tea hills of Cau Dat. Late spring sees the streets draped in the soft violet canopy of jacaranda trees.

Summer is the season of lavender and hydrangeas—lavender fields sway like waves under the sun, while hydrangeas burst with color like clusters of celestial orbs. Come autumn, golden sunflower fields brighten the landscape, and as winter arrives, wild sunflowers (dã quỳ) paint the hillsides in gold. Toward the year’s end, the delicate yellow of mimosa trees adds a gentle elegance, welcoming the new spring.

Beyond these seasonal wonders, many flowers bloom year-round—roses, orchids, forget-me-nots. In parks and cafes, along streets and balconies, in every corner of open land, flowers are ever-present. The northeast highland region (formerly Da Lat) is famously dubbed the “City of a Thousand Flowers,” yet perhaps even that title doesn’t quite capture it—for here, flowers bloom always, everywhere.
