Traditionally, the Vietnamese áo dài was not just a dress but was considered a symbol of beauty ideals. As expressed in historical fine arts and poetry, a woman wearing an áo dài displayed a slender waist, proud high neck and straight back. Looking back on this cultural heritage, designer Vo Viet Chung crafted his new collection, “Six Southern Provinces,” which explores the evolving áo dài in the South of Vietnam.
The collection turns to velvet fabric in dark shades to evoke the regality of the past golden era. Artistic inspirations are applied to decorative patterns on the panels of the áo dài to accentuate a graceful sense of movement. A selection of accessories also draws upon the traditions of Southern women. Vo Viet Chung’s “Six Southern Provinces” conveys a message of a soulful beauty that transcends time and place.
