Appreciation for the áo dài continues to grow in the international fashion world, and over the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays the spotlight shines brightly on Vietnam’s national dress. Designers bring a special focus to their unique spring áo dài collections, and this New Year 2019, fashion lovers have a wide variety of creative and colorful áo dài to choose from.

Thuy Nguyen has become a household name in recent years when it comes to revised and updated áo dài. In 2018, Thuy Nguyen launched her signature “Lady Ba of Saigon” áo dài collection, based on breezy and inspiring spring designs leaning toward classical forms and poetic inspirations. This New Year season, Thuy Nguyen introduced her new collection “Lotuses,” wedding a floral theme with Vietnamese folklore to accentuate the traditional, refined and delicate radiance of her áo dài. Taking advantage of her signature brocade, Thuy Nguyen utilized digital printing techniques to present hand drawn graphics in the form of revised and renewed folk mascots in harmonious juxtaposition to classical patterns of leaves, flowers and the zodiac animal of the year.

Ngoc Han, Miss Vietnam  2010, is renowned for designs that demonstrate her passion for the national dress. The new Tet Holiday áo dài collection by Ngoc Han preserves cultural essences through folk chants and idioms such as “The first day for our father, the second day our mother, and the third one our teacher,” or “The rooster crows for lime leaves/And the pigs sniffs for spring onions…” Painter Pham Trinh created folklore-inspired paintings for Ngoc Han to present on her exquisite spring áo dài designs. Other accompanying graphics include hand embroidery and beads to help the joys of spring joys ring forth in every step.
