Phong Van

This is the first time the artist Bui Thanh Thuy has agreed to illustrate a story. It can be seen as a commission, and this artist cherishes her freedom, especially her inner freedom. Why would she agree to draw someone else’s request?

“But this is a commission filled with joy!” she said with a laugh, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

I deluded myself into thinking that I was the second person, after her, to behold these layered paintings in various shades of green. Layers of green overlap with many hues. Through strokes and interplays of color hidden within a vast expanse of deep green, accents of white, orange-red, purple, and yellow emerge, evoking the forms of dragons. The artist has created a sense of space that floats between mystery and clarity, intertwining elements of sky and water, mountains, and sea. This portrayal of the Dragon exists in a realm that is both seen and unseen, real and unreal, blurring the lines between existence and illusion. These are thin ripples of color, seemingly as thin as could be, but layered, both covering and merging with lower layers to the extent that the viewer can feel each layer beneath. These layers contain the depth and contemplation of the painter amidst the blurred echoes of a distant past.

A painting from the "Lovescape 2022" exhibition

These delicate drawings remain true to the artist’s style. To preserve her personal creative freedom, Bui Thanh Thuy has long focused on painting. Amidst the haziness of finding her own path, the artist gradually realized that the only way forward was to return to her inner self, to listen and express her nature. She practiced and gradually mastered various methods of using materials, aiming to fully convey her personal emotions – wishing to speak to herself through art. Each thin layer of color requires a great deal of mental concentration. If one observes these delicate strokes slowly and for a long time, one will gradually feel the depth of the artist’s soul, authentic and relatable to all…

The art of painting is a journey to the endless spiritual world of mankind. Painters challenge themselves with each creative experience. More than that, they gain an opportunity to enjoy indescribable joy in silence. At times, the beholder also experiences that joy, when the painting before them speaks to them.
