For those who love nature and culture, Dong Hoi is the perfect destination – a peaceful city nestled on the sun-drenched, breezy coast of Central Vietnam, beside the Nhat Le River. Located in the heart of Quang Binh province, this region is known for the World Natural Heritage site of Phong Nha-Ke Bang and bears the imprints of history and profound cultural values. In addition to being captivated by the beautiful mountains, sea, and sky, visitors sense the soul of this land and its people in every alley and street corner.

Walking along the Nhat Le River, especially in early spring, you’ll feel the cool sea breeze carrying a gentle evening chill. On both sides of the river stand historical relics like the old fortress of Quang Binh Quan and Dong Hoi Citadel, silent witnesses to the past. With its star-shaped architecture and surrounding deep moat, Dong Hoi Citadel was built to defend the land against northern invasions. Quang Binh Quan, one of the three ancient gates, has been restored and now serves as a cultural and historical symbol of Dong Hoi and Quang Binh. These landmarks evoke memories of a heroic era while showcasing the serene beauty of this region.
Every visitor to Dong Hoi should visit the Mother Suot Monument by the Nhat Le River. Mother Suot, a resilient Quang Binh woman, became a symbol of the indomitable spirit and boundless sacrifice of Vietnamese women as she rowed her boat through bombing and shelling to ferry soldiers across the river. Standing as a tribute to her courage, this monument is a source of pride for the people of Dong Hoi, honoring the silent sacrifices that mothers and grandmothers made for their country.

In the heart of the city lies Ho Chi Minh Square, serving not just as a gathering space but as a venue for major cultural events. On festive days, the square is decorated with lights, and people from all over congregate to reminisce about their traditions and honor the contributions of President Ho Chi Minh.
Another destination that preserves the heroic memories of this land is the Quang Binh General Museum. Displaying over 15,000 artifacts and images, the museum encapsulates Quang Binh’s history across various periods. Visitors can journey back in time, gaining insight into the lives and resilience of the locals through each era. Every artifact and photograph tells a story, contributing to the vibrant mosaic of this steadfast and unyielding land.
In addition to its historical relics, Dong Hoi is celebrated for its rich and flavorful Central Vietnamese cuisine. Lau ca khoai(khoai fish hotpot) boasts fresh, sweet fish and savory broth that’s sure to delight visitors. Chao banh canh , a simple yet flavorful noodle dish, is another must-try. Notably, khoai deo – a humble, sweet, and chewy snack made from sun-dried sweet potatoes – has become a meaningful gift that locals often share with travelers from afar.

In Dong Hoi, you can explore the expansive natural scenery of the area’s vast dunes. No longer just stretches of white sand under the scorching sun, these dunes form a vibrant playground, offering activities like sandboarding and off-roading. The laughter and chatter of tourists, carried by the wind over the dunes, fill the air with energy and excitement.
Strolling through narrow streets, you’ll likely come across Dong Hoi’s bustling seafood market, where fishermen deliver their fresh catches. The lively trading atmosphere, combined with the aroma of fresh seafood, adds to the coastal town’s unique charm. Meanwhile, the quaint alleys, lined with cozy coffee shops and tiny stores tucked beneath green canopies, create a sense of peace and tranquility.
Set beside the Nhat Le River, the small city of Dong Hoi has found a place in many visitors’ hearts, leaving them captivated by this “coastal town, river love”.
