A musical space in the heart of the homeland

On a warm sunny afternoon, visiting Master Artisan Ro Cham Tih’s home in Jut 1 village, Ia Der commune, Ia Grai district, Pleiku City, Gia Lai, we stepped into a space brimming with traditional musical instruments. Over ten types were displayed, each showcasing unique features and playing styles, including the T’rung, Goong, K’rong Put, Ko Ni, Glong Gloh, Ro Het, and Ting Ning.

Sharing with Heritage, artisan Ro Cham Tih passionately recalled: “As a child, I would sit beside my father, mesmerized by his skillful crafting of instruments from bamboo and rattan. The melodious sounds from these materials struck a chord deep within me. Instead of joining friends to play, I chose to stay with the village elders, listening to every note and learning the art of crafting ethnic instruments. Each evening, the melodies from these instruments sparked an enduring passion for ethnic music in my heart…”

Klek Klok – a creation born from passion

Ro Cham Tih’s passion extends beyond merely playing music; it encompasses a desire to explore and develop traditional instruments. This led him to create the Klek Klok – an instrument with unique features that reflect his dedication and talent in preserving the essence of ethnic music.

He explained the process of perfecting the Klek Klok: “First, I carefully select high-quality rattan stalks, each three to four meters long. After harvesting, I sun-dry them to achieve the ideal moisture balance. The next step is meticulously shaping the curves to ensure the perfect sound. Building the frame and assembling each part is critical to creating harmony. Finally, I attach the legs, crafting an instrument that is visually striking and a true reflection of the spirit of my homeland.”

The Klek Klok enables Ro Cham Tih to share stories, emotions, and cultural memories from his homeland—the place of his birth and upbringing. Each melody he plays resonates with a deep love for his land and its people. It is more than just music; it embodies the free-spirited, romantic soul of the Central Highlands community.
