Located in the heart of eastern Germany, Dresden is a treasure trove of art, architecture and vibrant modern life.

Dresden presents two distinct facets, divided by the Elbe River that flows through the city. The Altstadt side preserves a historical heritage that has stood the test of time, while the Neustadt side represents a modern, dynamic, colorful expression of Germany.

Dresden is a city where the beauty of the antique and modern stand side-by-side

Wandering through ancient Altstadt

Surrounded by the Osterzgebirge mountain range on one side and a magnificent rocky vista on the other, with the Elbe meandering through, Dresden appeared before my eyes as a picturesque landscape. Even in the middle of June, the city remained pleasant, filled with bright sunshine, fresh air and cool breezes. Eager to savor the gentle summer here, I decided to explore Dresden starting from Altstadt – where time seems to stand still amidst the ancient beauty of architectural landmarks bearing the imprint of the noble Saxon kings.

To begin my journey back to the Middle Ages, I visited the Zwinger Palace, an iconic Baroque masterpiece renowned throughout Germany. Designed by brilliant architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and built in 1709, the Zwinger Palace boasts magnificent sandstone buildings adorned with thousands of exquisite Renaissance-style sculptures. Strolling along its lavishly decorated corridors, I followed intricately carved balustrades and enjoyed the radiant sunlight reflecting through fountains. Immersed in this realm of the past, I could imagine a scene of European nobles enjoying a classical musical concert, their gracious smiles like a movie reel running across my vision.

The Frauenkirche, with its magnificent restored dome, is considered an architectural wonder

Continuing along the Elbe River, I passed by the famous Fürstenzug mural – a unique work of art composed of 25,000 Meissen porcelain tiles depicting the procession of the kings of Saxony. More than 100 meters of porcelain murals recreate the nearly 800-year reign of the royal family, a tableau of majestic monarchs on horseback captivating viewers with heroic tales of the House of Wettin dynasty. Striding past the Fürstenzug mural, I walked through a vast expanse seemingly unaffected by time. The ancient beauty preserved in its original, solemn state can make easily make one forget that modern life was still unfolding on the other side of the Elbe.

Down the Elbe to vibrant Neustadt

From the Fürstenzug mural area to the Frauenkirche Church, I lost track of time in Dresden’s ancient charm. I almost missed the journey to explore the Elbe on the world’s oldest and largest steamboat, which I had booked in advance. Drifting along the Elbe offered breathtakingly beautiful scenes, with a succession of majestic architectural works appearing in the rosy hues of sunset that lit up the sky. But as the historical ambiance surrounded me, a quick glance to the northern bank of the city revealed Neustadt – a dynamic and colorful slice of modern Germany.

If you choose to spend the whole day immersed in the opulent medieval life of Saxony, then Neustadt is the perfect place to explore after sunset on an empty stomach. I couldn’t believe that just a few hours ago I had been transported to the 18th century and now I found myself amidst the 21st century buzz of bars, restaurants and shops. Choosing a bustling local eatery, I ordered sauerbraten – a hearty beef dish with red cabbage and potatoes, accompanied by rich, savory Dresdner Handbrot bread.

Finally, a trip to Dresden would incomplete without tasting delicious and sophisticated German wines. Against the poetic backdrop of the Elbe, enjoying a glass of white wine, I observed the contrasting lives on both sides of the river and felt as if I had just gone through a time- traveling adventure. In the lightness of the wine glass, I felt the wonderful connection between the past and the present in Dresden. A profound historical, cultural and artistic legacy coexisting with modern, refined values creates a spiritual harmony and balance of life for the people of Dresden – and, of course, for anyone who has the chance to visit this beautiful city.
