Surely everyone’s childhood was spent eagerly chasing the flickering lights of tiny fireflies on summer nights. These insects, only present in the summer, are increasingly rare in cities and densely populated areas. If you wish to enjoy the dancing lights of thousands of fireflies, head to Cuc Phuong National Park this summer.

Fireflies only glow during the summer

Located within the territories of Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh, and Thanh Hoa provinces, Cuc Phuong National Park is a nature reserve with a rich and diverse ecosystem of flora and fauna.  In the summer, this forest draws visitors who come to explore and experience nature—and to relive childhood memories of twinkling fireflies.

Also known as glowworms or lightning bugs, fireflies are a type of beetle. These small, hard-winged insects emit light to attract mates, especially at dusk. Fireflies hibernate during the larval stage and emerge in the spring. They feed for some weeks and pupate for one to two-and-a-half weeks before maturing.

On summer evenings in Cuc Phuong’s deep forests, if you’re lucky, you can witness the dance of thousands of glowing fireflies. These insects prefer damp, dark places with plenty of vegetation, away from artificial light, dust, and chemicals.

Amidst the silent night with only the sounds of birds, insects, and the fireflies’ magical light, humans suddenly seem small amidst the vastness of nature. Step into a sparkling, mystical fairytale world this summer.
