The 2024 Heritage Photography Award began with a photo tour titled: “Ha Giang spring in the “cat-ear” rocky mountains”. From February 22 to 26, 2024, participating photographers went off-road in scenic Ha Giang province.

On the rocky plateau in Ha Giang’s highlands, flowers were blooming in their most vibrant colors as a fleet of Defenders set off, bringing participants on a photo tour organized by Heritage Magazine and Land Rover Vietnam. For five days, participants explored some of the nation’s most remote regions, journeying across the serpentine routes of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac districts. The tour’s photographers and travel bloggers documented the natural beauty and local people in this area.
For most group members, this trip to Ha Giang was not their first visit, but the landscape always evokes fresh love and emotions, making everyone feel as if they are “falling in love for the first time”. While each tree and stone pillar of Tham Ma Slope and the 9-turns pass felt familiar, every corner hid fascinating aspects that left everyone keen to explore.

Experienced photographers like Tran Giap, Khanh Phan, Tuan Nguyen, Tonkin, Hai Nguyen, and Minh Quan captured unique images of this region in its vivid spring colors. They documented layers of towering “cat-ear” mountains, H’Mong women in flared skirts, the yellow-brown hues of earthen houses, the black-grey of yin-yang tiles glimpsed among mounds of pink peach blossoms, the white of plum and pear flowers, and the red of bombax flowers. There were warm and unexpected encounters between travel blogger Hoang Nam (Challenge Me) and his fans who affectionately call him “Mr. Hoang Nam of Ha Giang”, and cute moments with KOL Dang Thuy Duong (Nanavivu) in poetic scenery adorned with spring flowers.
Right from the first days of the journey, every member of the group experienced many emotions. Photographer Tonkin shared, “Peach, plum, and pear flowers bloomed as we crossed Tham Ma Slope. The feelings from nearly 20 years ago came flooding back. I missed Ha Giang.”
There was a touching story of Mr. Hoang Nam being reunited with a blind H’Mong boy he’d met many years ago, back when he’d found someone to teach the boy to play the H’Mong flute so that he could earn a living. “On every journey, despite a packed schedule, I always make time to visit and introduce Dzi, my adopted H’Mong son, when coming to Dong Van, Ha Giang,” said Mr. Hoang Nam. “Today, I am moved to see that he has grown up to beautifully play the flute, which resonates through the mountains and forests. What would Dzi be like now if he hadn’t met me years ago? If there were no Mr. A Pao, who would have taught him? This urges me to do more meaningful things. I don’t expect thanks because this is my destiny. Giving brings happiness!”

On the last day of the journey, Mr. Tran Giap seemed to speak for the whole group when he said: “When we parked the Defender 130 in the lot, after night had fallen and the drizzle was growing heavier, it marked the end of an emotional journey, a journey that connected legacies. One Classic Defender 2011 had accompanied its owner around five continents, and two Defender 110s and 130s had allowed us to discover the simple yet fascinating aspects of the highland rocky plateau. We travelled through the season of blooming flowers when plum, peach, pear, and bombax flowers fully unfurl, adding color to this grey rocky region. I will always remember those afternoons in this remote frontier area…”
An emotional journey came to a close, leaving behind a world of longing and memories!
