Lai Trong Tinh

As the twelfth lunar month arrives, regardless of their wealth or how busy they are, Vietnamese people shift to a new state of mind – the spirit of Tet. From the North to the South, from the lowlands to the highlands, every household begins to save and gather the best things for the approaching spring season. Spring symbolizes a new beginning, and everyone hopes for the perfect start to the year.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, the hustle and bustle intensifies with the purchase of peach and apricot blossoms, ornamental flowers, and dry goods in preparation for the festivities. This careful preparation ensures a prosperous and fulfilling New Year celebration. On the eve of the last day of the year, if someone is still away and hasn’t returned to their family, it’s said that they are still caught up in life’s struggles. Therefore, everyone longs to be present, gathering together in the warmth and love of their family home.

As life changes, although many taboos about the Tet days are gradually fading, important rituals are still preserved. Maintaining traditional customs is also a way to return to the spiritual values that our ancestors nurtured, shaping the Vietnamese identity.

As important holidays approach, everyone eagerly anticipates fully enjoying their break in their own way. Then come the journeys: leisurely travels and journeys filled with joy. Some head to the Northwest to admire peach and apricot blossoms bursting into color amidst the thin blue rain, blending with the mountains and hills, and participate in festivals with ethnic minority communities. Others follow melodious traditional songs to the folk festivals of the Northern Delta region. There are those who seek private, serene spaces beside the blue sea, with white sands and golden sun.

Whether the old year was a success or contained unresolved issues, Tet always opens up a verdant spring full of hopes and plans. To travel – to stay – to return, all will be complete experiences in this beloved land of Vietnam.
